New Zealanders’ pub and living room debates on who is the superior Barrett are soon to be resolved, thanks to a ‘Best Barrett’ TV format in development.
The show with a working title of ‘Niggle in the Naki’ and will see multiple Barretts go head to head in a number of contests for points, with one Barrett to be crowned champion at the series conclusion.
With three All Blacks and a domestic rugby representative in the Barrett whānau there’s no shortage of athletic prowess. But producers are promising an even contest in a number of disciplines both physical and cerebral with plenty of scope for mind games, and potential for airing of historic grievances to play a role.
But who is the early favourite?
“Some contests appear obvious. You’d be brave to go past Mrs Barrett for ‘Best scones’ and Beaudy would be a strong contender for ‘Best influencer wife’, but ‘Best handbrake turn’ and ‘Install an electrical plug’ are wide open,” said TV executive Damon Salmon-Croissant.
Canterbury-based Scott Barrett is up for the fight: “Yeah I’m the biggest so that means the best in my book. I’m ready, just need to keep the penalty count down though eh.” Beauden and Jordi were both playing golf when contacted.
The entire series will be available for Barrett Bingers immediately online, and scheduled to screen at 6.00pm on TV1 for 32 consecutive days. Discussions are underway for a second series that will see the Barretts face off against the Whitelocks should the format prove a hit.

Recommendation
I’ve started watching Full Swing, the Drive to Survive of golf. It’s an easy watch and lays bare the pressures inherent in playing sport for money and prestige and to support your family, not helped by the head-wrecking aspects of golf itself. Plus there are sick Florida mansions. With LIV Golf kicking off mid-season, there’s excellent insights into some decent humans but also some proper freaks. It’s on Netflix.
