Several boats still in Hauraki Gulf, unaware America's Cup racing has concluded
Sport Review #147
NEWSDESK: Despite Team New Zealand securing the America’s Cup 7-3 on March 17, several vessels remain in party mode on the water, waiting for racing to resume.
The large spectator fleet was a big feature of the 36th America’s Cup, but news of the end of the regatta has not made it to all supporter craft.
“We’re diehard Pete Burling fans here,” said Dom Wineopener from Tauranga, skipper of the Negative Gearing. “It’s a long wait between races, so luckily we’ve got the full set of Gareth Morgan books on board. Plus we start drinking at 11am. Beats working eh!”
Despite waiting for a race that will never come, spirits are high thanks to chartered water taxis delivering champagne and artisan pizza from Wynyard Quarter restaurants.
Other supporters told media “Isn’t this simply a magical setting for racing?”, “Go Team New Zealand!” and “Can you charge my phone?” today.
“It seems unfathomable big news like the retention of the America’s Cup could be missed,” said media commentator Leslie Merino. “But if you combine prolonged lack of access to 1 News with marine conditions and enough gin, it’s certainly possible.”
“We were wondering what the fireworks were for, but everyone on the boat decided it probably meant you didn’t need to scan in any more,” said Desley Railtrail of Pauanui, who has been bobbing off the East Coast Bays for 12 days.
Television New Zealand has chartered a boat for Toni Street and Scotty Morrison to break the news to the crews on the gulf.
