NEWSDESK: Former Rugby World Cup winner and semifinalist Steve Hansen confirmed today he had a replica coaches box built in his house, for relaxing and activities.
“We decluttered over lockdown. After getting rid of the train table, I found we had extra room in the hobby nook. Getting home from the bowls club and having a 6m x 4m area to decompress is a great use of space.”
Hansen has been able to inform his box design with ideas from years on the pro rugby circuit. It has a sparse aesthetic centred on functionality, with the exception of storing an unused air fryer and Weetbix card collection in a box labelled ‘Sallies’.
“There’s a computer and quite a lot of water bottles. There’s an absorbent mat on the desk for thumping without damaging your wrist. I got a chair without arms cos I caught my trou on the desk a fair few times while standing up to shout at refs, let me tell you. There’s also a fridge.”
Hansen has made use of his coaches box for watching rugby and his race horses, taking Zoom calls and securing valued alone time during family events.
“I’ve got an 80” TV in there, and sometimes you feel like the players are listening to your instructions. And the horses. I’ve invited Ted over to watch a Test with me, but the diaries haven’t worked yet,” said Hansen.
Fibre company Chorus confirmed the computer wasn’t connected to anything.
